County libraries to become contact centres
Libraries across the county are to become contact points for residents who want face-to-face advice on how to access the county council's range of services.
The new initiative aims to make better use of the countywide network of library premises to deliver improved services to residents in their local areas.
Robert Gordon, leader of Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Hertfordshire was one of the first local authorities to introduce a customer service call centre and our successful website allows people to apply for services or get information around the clock.
"This has helped us to fit in with the busy pace of modern life while reducing unnecessary and expensive bureaucracy.
“But we recognise that in some situations face-to-face contact is the best way to meet people’s needs, particularly if they need help with a complex query or find communication over the phone or internet difficult.
“Libraries are the ideal venue for face-to-face contact because they are conveniently located and well-known to the public," he added.
Residents can also access county council services from their own homes by calling the Customer Service Centre on 01438 737555 or 01923 471555 (if calling from 0208 or 01923 codes) between 8am and 8pm Mon – Fri and 9am to 4pm Sat, or by visiting www.hertsdirect.org/interactive.
